This is a pet peeve of mine. (Uh-oh!) Your curiosity is "piqued." You "peek" around corners. And that's the "peak" of the iceberg. My weakness is compliment and complement when it comes to inanimate objects.

My pet peeve… actually, it's more than a peeve, it's something that makes me close a book and never look at it again, if even the copy editor misses it (because, darnit, the copy editor should at least spot this stuff!)… so my absolute "Please go and learn English!!!" is…
Breathe / Breath.
I can't even tell you how many times I've seen this in edited books.
"Emily couldn't breath / forgot to breath." (etc etc etc)
When I see something like this, it seriously makes me want to go and drag the author to the nearest dictionary and slam dunk them onto the page until they can't "Breath".
You BREATHE a BREATH. How HARD is it to remember that?
Seriously, it makes me want to hold people's heads under water until they nearly drown, and then let them up so they can breathe.

No, actually. I'm not sorry lol. I really hate it that much, and I didn't grow up speaking English. I had to learn it. (Which is probably why I have less of those habits.
